The 20s run on a different set of priorities than any decade that follows. Square footage barely registers; a walkable neighborhood, a calendar full of things to do, and people your age nearby matter enormously. So does the rent, because most of this decade is spent early in the earning curve, and a city you cannot afford is a city you spend indoors. The right place in your 20s is one that says yes to spontaneity without wrecking the budget.
This list leans into exactly that. Activity, walkability, and affordability carry the most weight, and the rent is capped at $2,000 to keep it honest for an early-career paycheck. It sits between two neighbors: it caps tighter and weights walkability higher than our young-professionals guide, and it leans harder into energy than the more balanced in-your-30s list. The cities that rise are the reachable, high-energy ones where a small apartment buys a big life.
