Best small cities to live in

Under 500,000 metro population. Ranked by quality of life, not name recognition. The small cities worth knowing about.

By Karol Gajda

The small-city case is simple: lower density does not have to mean lower quality. The cities on this list have real park systems, decent weather, and enough going on that a weekend does not require a drive to the nearest big metro.

Every city here has a metro population under 500,000, ranked by the full Landable composite. These are the places the mid-size and big-city guides leave out, and several of them quietly out-live cities ten times their size.

the ranking

how we ranked

We rank by 25% affordability, 25% weather, 20% parks, 20% things to do, and 10% walkability among cities with metro populations under 500,000 (US Census MSA data).

common questions

What counts as a small city here?
Metro population under 500,000, per US Census MSA data. That captures the full economic footprint of the area, not just the city limits.
Do small cities have enough going on?
The ones that rank well on things-to-do despite small populations tend to be college towns or regional cultural hubs. They are small by number, not by character.
