Big cities trade some affordability for depth: more to do, more to reach, more transit. Among the major metros, these strike the best balance without the worst of the big-city tax.

Most livability lists skew small and mid-sized, and for a defensible reason: big metros lose points on cost, and cost is a big part of livability. But plenty of people are not looking to downsize their city. They want the density, the depth, the airport with real flights, the transit that means a car is optional. For them the honest question is not whether to live in a major metro, it is which major metro balances best.
This list answers that. It is filtered to metros above two million people and then ranked on the things only scale provides: walkable streets, transit reach, flight connections, and the depth of what there is to do. Affordability still counts, but it does not lead, because a big metro that ranks well on cost is usually one that is thin on everything else. The result is the set of major metros that pay back what you give up to live in one.
