Best cities for snowbirds

220+ pleasant days, low state income tax, rent under $2,000. The cities that solve the winter problem without creating a tax or budget problem.

By Karol Gajda

Snowbirds need a specific combination: winters warm enough to justify the move, taxes low enough to make sense on retirement income, and rent affordable enough to run two residences. Most of the famous snowbird destinations have gotten too expensive, too hot in summer, or both.

This list filters for 220 or more pleasant days, a state income tax rate under 6%, and rent under $2,000, then ranks by weather and affordability. The cities that surface are often not the ones the brochures push.

the ranking

how we ranked

We rank by 40% weather, 30% affordability, 15% parks, 10% walkability, and 5% things to do, filtered to at least 220 pleasant days, a state income tax rate under 6%, and median rent under $2,000.

common questions

What makes a good snowbird city?
Warm winters, low taxes on retirement income, and affordable rent for a second residence. This list filters for all three before it ranks.
Do these cities get too hot in summer?
Some do, and snowbirds usually leave in summer anyway. The pleasant-days score rewards year-round comfort, so cities that are oppressive in summer rank lower even with great winters.
