Best cities to live in the South

From Texas to Virginia. The South's best cities ranked by the full Landable composite, not by name recognition.

By Karol Gajda

The South has spent the last decade turning from a cost-of-living refuge into an actual destination: lower rent than the coasts, warm weather most of the year, and food and music scenes that have grown up fast. The migration numbers tell the story plainly.

This list covers the full Southern footprint, from Texas to Virginia, and ranks by the standard Landable composite, balancing affordability, weather, things to do, parks, and walkability. The cities that rise are the ones that get the whole package right.

the ranking

how we ranked

We rank by 25% affordability, 25% weather, 20% things to do, 15% parks, and 15% walkability across Southern states (TX, FL, GA, NC, SC, TN, VA, AL, LA, AR, OK). The weather score penalizes extreme heat, so the most brutal summers rank lower.

common questions

Which states count as the South here?
TX, FL, GA, NC, SC, TN, VA, AL, LA, AR, and OK. We leave out border-state ambiguous cases like Missouri and Kentucky.
What about the heat?
Many Southern cities run a lot of extreme heat days. The weather score penalizes days above 95 degrees, so cities with brutal summers rank lower than those with milder versions of warm weather.
